Chapter Seventeen

Miles

My body screams at me to fuck something up. The tie-rod on the old Ford I’m fixing is rusted in place, so it gets the brunt of my anger. My ball-peen hammer feels right in my hand as I strike the castle nut repeatedly, pretending it’s Rainn Harding’s face. The damn thing comes loose way too soon, and I growl in frustration as I search for something else to pound.

I should take a break before I damage something I can’t fix.

But it’s too late for that. I had my chance, and I fucked it up. Everything I worked for in the last year to keep Cher safe was within my grasp, but I threw it all away for a pair of blue eyes.

I don’t know what to do next. This wedding cannot happen. But the hurt look on Zye’s face gutted me. This is his job. His livelihood.

Then I’m back to being angry. Because his job — his business — is more important than my best friend marrying the wrong man. But Zye doesn’t believe in love. He doesn’t believe in happily ever after. He believes in happy-right-now. And Cher seems happy. Well, she did before Mac showed up.

I can’t blame Zye or my best friend, which brings me back to Rainn. This is all his fault. And he deserted Zye.

Fucker.

Tossing the old tie-rod onto my workbench, I hammer the shit out of it, working out my frustration until it’s nothing but flattened metal. That felt good. Satisfying. Setting the hammer down, I stretch my arms and roll my shoulders.

“I think it’s dead.”

Rainn. In my shop, glaring at me. This is my lucky day. I didn’t even have to search the fucker out. I reach for my hammer, and he steps back, almost stumbling. I smirk and cross my arms. “Sneaking up on someone is dangerous. Especially if they have a weapon.” I pause so he gets the point. “Especially if they’re you.”

He ignores that. “Can we talk?” His eyes flicker to the hammer again, and I smirk at his discomfort.

Sweat pours off me, so I grab a shop rag to wipe the back of my neck. As I take a long drink from my iced tea, I act like I’m considering his words.

I’m not. I don’t need to. I’m ready to talk.

And if talking leads to punching, especially if he makes the first move, so I have deniability, I’m all in. “What do you want, Rainn?”

“I want you to stay away from Zye.”

My mouth drops open in disbelief. Jesus, the balls on this guy. A laugh bubbles up, and I can’t keep it in. He opens his mouth to speak, and I hold up a finger, signaling him to wait. And then I laugh some more. Rubbing my jaw, I try to get myself under control. I might be a little hysterical. I clear my throat. “You want me to stay away from Zye? Well, if we’re talking about wishes, I have several. I wish you’d been a better brother—oh yeah, I know about that—I wish you’d go away.
